Pablo Cristi, age 49, passed away on the morning of Sunday, April 12. He is lovingly remembered by his partner, Natsumi Iimura; his mother and stepfather, Isabel Rojas-Williams and Stephen Williams; and by the many family, friends, students, colleagues, and loved ones whose lives he touched.
With Pablo’s passing, the world lost a vital presence: an artist of conviction, a devoted educator, a generous mentor, and a pillar across many communities. He was a son of Los Angeles, a proud child of Chilean exiles, and a beloved ambassador of East Los Angeles, carrying his roots with pride wherever life took him.
Born to parents who fled the Pinochet regime, Pablo inherited a legacy of resilience, dignity, and political awareness that informed both his life and his art. His creative practice explored power, representation, history, and cultural memory. Through painting and sculpture, he transformed inquiry into beauty, giving visual form to stories of survival, erasure, and renewal.
Pablo was equally extraordinary as a teacher. As Chair of the Visual Art Program at Oakland School for the Arts, he did more than instruct—he championed. He challenged students to believe in themselves, to refine their gifts, and to understand art as a path toward self-discovery, purpose, and social justice. Generations of young artists carry his lessons forward.
He earned his Master of Fine Arts from California College of the Arts and received the Barclay Simpson Award in 2009. His work is held in private collections and esteemed institutions, including AltaMed and The Cheech Marin Center for Chicano Art & Culture, and has been exhibited in Tokyo, New York City, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Oakland.
To those who knew him, Pablo offered more than a greeting—he offered warmth, presence, and the embrace of a big brother. He was known for his radiant eyes, signature scarves, deep heart, and rare gift for fully seeing people in their wholeness.
Pablo lived fully, loved generously, and left every room richer for his presence. He will be profoundly missed and enduringly remembered.
Pablo Cristi, de 49 años, falleció en la mañana del domingo 12 de abril. Es recordado con amor por su pareja, Natsumi Iimura; su madre y padrastro, Isabel Rojas-Williams y Stephen Williams; y por los numerosos familiares, amigos, estudiantes, colegas y seres queridos cuyas vidas tocó.
Con la partida de Pablo, el mundo perdió una presencia vital: un artista de convicción, un educador dedicado, un mentor generoso y un pilar en muchas comunidades. Fue hijo de Los Ángeles, orgulloso descendiente de exiliados chilenos y un querido embajador del Este de Los Ángeles, llevando sus raíces con orgullo dondequiera que lo llevara la vida.
Nacido de padres que huyeron del régimen de Pinochet, Pablo heredó un legado de resiliencia, dignidad y conciencia política que marcó tanto su vida como su arte. Su práctica creativa exploró el poder, la representación, la historia y la memoria cultural. A través de la pintura y la escultura, transformó la reflexión en belleza, dando forma visual a historias de supervivencia, supresión y renovación.
Pablo fue igualmente extraordinario como maestro. Como director del Programa de Artes Visuales de la Oakland School for the Arts, hizo más que enseñar: impulsó a otros. Desafió a los estudiantes a creer en sí mismos, a perfeccionar sus talentos y a entender el arte como un camino hacia el autodescubrimiento, el propósito y la justicia social. Generaciones de artistas jóvenes llevan consigo sus lecciones.
Pablo obtuvo su Maestría en Bellas Artes en el California College of the Arts y recibió el Premio Barclay Simpson en 2009.
